drums, the Pygmies and the gamelan—was intensely related to what was going on in Tribeca that day. And—as I listen to this cassette from twenty years ago (including her taunting hints of what happened while she was a guest in the French producer's house on Mulholland Drive—un peu Eyes Wide Shut—during her visit to rainy-season LA while I was à bout de souffle on the telephone from my hotel in Montreal the week before on tour), I'm reminded of a feeling I had those days, I guess the best word is "ache", a longing to be somewhere both musically and personally, that was underscored by the ecstatically chromatic coda of Marvin's 'Come Live With Me' and how I wanted to be playing that cool and spikey trumpet solo at the end. As I write this, Mati Klarwein's painting catches my attention: a beautiful, half-naked girl stands on a hilltop holding a spear, looking out on a vast landscape including a levitating holy man, a flaming pagoda, a row of golden pyramids receding into the distant mountains and lakes, a column of laughing white elephants ambling along

a terraced Mediterranean hillside and I think of the title of Dali"s manifesto, Declaration of the Independence of the Imagination and the Rights of Man to His Own Madness and I mull over the possible clues as to why Mati and Dali (and Mati and I) wound up in each other"s personal sphere.

Apr83 Concerts in Milan (Teatro Orfeo), Paris (Theatre de la Bastille)...The first time I hear the word "postmodern" comes from Hector Zazou describing Aka-Darbari-Java.

18Apr83 I stay in Paris after the concert and Ch and I spark up an evening with our friend Sandoz again, and wind up playing the recording of the scene in New York (above) while I record our listening to it, layering laughter and running commentary on top. Later, we go out to see a midnight showing of Fellini's Satyricon. Now that's what I call a date.
